The City of Dalhart is situated in the northwest corner of the Texas Panhandle, located in two counties: Dallam County on the North and Hartley County on the South. Not only is Dalhart in the middle of two counties, it is the home of the XIT Rodeo and center of the largest free barbeque around! Folks travel from far and wide to Dalhart every year to enjoy the three-day rodeo festivities that triple the town’s population.
Dalhart is also located on the Ports-to-Plains Trade Corridor with key highway and rail infrastructure and easy access to Colorado, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Thriving businesses like Hilmar Cheese, the Union Pacific railroad, the Santa Fe railroad, and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice continue to boost the economy, while other industries such as financial services, technology services, dairies, farming, and ranching are also enjoying a growing employee base.
Dalhart has responded to this growth with the expansion of Highway 87, remodeling of the Rita Blanca Coliseum, and construction of a brand new high school campus. The Dalhart Independent School District features the Dalhart elementary, intermediate, jr. high, and high schools, which are in addition to two local private schools (Dalhart Christian Academy and St. Anthony’s Catholic School).
The community in Dalhart is home to numerous area churches and has access to the Coon Memorial Hospital and several other health care offerings such as assisted living, nursing homes, sports medicine and eye care businesses.
In addition to being the home of the XIT Rodeo, recreational opportunities abound in Dalhart as well. The city offers hiking and biking trails around Lake Rita Blanca, a community pool with fun water features, a skate park, and several citywide parades and events. Dalhart’s location in the Panhandle also will allow you to get from the plains to the mountains in the blink of an eye, so whether it’s skiing, hunting, or camping, Dalhart is on the way!
