Get to Know Dalhart

Located approximately 70 miles northwest of Amarillo, and at the intersection of Hwy 54 and Hwy 87, the City of Dalhart is the gateway for travelers and commerce which comes and goes through the Texas Panhandle from nearby states like Oklahoma, New Mexico and Colorado.

Thriving businesses like Hilmar Cheese, the Union Pacific Railroad (UPSP), the Burlington Northern (BNSF) Railroad and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice continue to boost the economy, while other industries such as financial services, technology services, dairies, farming, and ranching are also enjoying a growing employee base.

XIT Rodeo

Located just a quarter mile to the SW of the Seminole Trail Subdivision, and held in remembrance of the area’s massive historic XIT Ranch, the City of Dalhart hosts the XIT Museum and the annual XIT Rodeo and Reunion. The rodeo is typically held the first Thursday through Sunday of August and includes three days of junior and professional (PRCA) rodeo events, the world’s largest free barbecue, three nights of live music, a mud bog competition, an antique tractor pull, and other activities.

Dalhart Middle & High Schools

It’s only a few steps, or a short bike ride, from the northern end of the Seminole Trail Subdivsion to both the Dalhart Middle School and High School. Both schools are public schools, home to the Golden Wolves, and part of the Dalhart Independent School District which covers much of both Dallam and Hartley counties. Dalhart High School serves more than 400 students in grades 9-12 and is classified as a 3A school by the UIL. Dalhart High School opened its new campus near the Seminole Trail Subdivsion to students in the fall of 2009 and the new Memorial Stadium was opened in 2011.

Dalhart Community Pool & Skate Park

Located at Tennessee & 16th Street, the recently renovated swimming pool incorporates play and splash water features and slides for the enjoyment of young and old. The swimming pool is open during summer vacation and has a concession area. There is a small entry fee and special times are reserved for family nights, lap swimming and water aerobics. The pool can also be reserved for private parties. Other amenities at the park include an outdoor skateboard facility, basketball courts, picnic pavilion, playground equipment and sand volleyball courts.

Lake Rita Blanca & Park

Just south of the Seminole Trail Subdivision sits Lake Rita Blanca and the related park. Lake Rita Blanca is a prime recreational spot, boasting a 160-acre lake surrounded by and additional 1,680 acres of park and recreational offerings. The lake itself is an excellent location for bird viewing throughout the year, and the hiking/biking/horse trails around the area make it perfect for wildlife viewing. Rita Blanca State Park is Dalhart’s largest park and was once the northernmost state park in Texas. The park also includes a little league baseball complex with multiple fields, while the most recent addition to the park is an 18 hole disc golf course.
